And Today's Headline Is...

After 120 years of research, Comspolitan Magazine has officially cataloged every possible way a woman can please her man...yaaay! Well, I don't know about you but that's a breakthrough in the history of women and science! (totally sarcastic :))

A Kinda Cool CoZmo Story

This was a very interesting "Media" article, well, considering that it was from Cosmopolitan Mag anyway :)

CoZmo Counterfeit!

Well, it looks like Cosmopolitan made a little boo-boo and forgot to ask actress Scarlett Johansson and friends permission to use some quotes before fabricating an interview last month. This all took place in the January 2009 UK Issue of Cosmopolitan magazine--she and lawyer are definitely ready to take legal action. Currently, Scarlett's lawyer says that he and the star will sue the magazine in the British courts unless the article is retracted. "We're waiting to see what [Cosmopolitan's] response is" he says.

That's insane, right? And apparently in this edition, during Scarlett's "interview" there were details about her personal life and marriage to her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds. Scarlett's agent said that she hardly ever includes the media inside her (personal) life, especially with intimate details about her and her husband. Her agent described the quotes as 'absolutely fabricated'.

In a statement the National Magazine Company, part of the American media conglomerate Hearst Corporation, said: "UK Cosmopolitan printed an interview with Scarlett Johansson that included quotes from an agency journalist regarding the actress's marriage. We ran these quotes in good faith with the understanding that the interview was carried out with the approval of Ms Johansson and her publicist."

Now, that was very very wrong of them--for them to blantantly lie and say that Scarlett and Co., approved the quotes. Good luck to both parties (because I still love my Cosmo!)

CoZmo Confusion?

So, the big news is:

The Hearst Corp., the multimedia empire behind Cosmopolitan magazine, filed a trademark infringement lawsuit in federal court claiming the Strip megaresort's use of the Cosmopolitan name is trying to enrich itself by using the Cosmopolitan magazine's good name in an attempt to confuse the public into thinking the development is associated with the publishing company.

In other words, developers (whom may actually succeed!) plan on opening a resort under the same name as the Cosmopolitan Magazine. The debate was whether or not the Cosmo brand is a strong enough name to prevent this developer from using their name as leverage for creating a succesful resort in vegas.

When I think of a resort named "Cosmopolitan Resort" I would immediately think that it was associated with the magazine, and maybe the drink--but definitely the magazine! That's ridiculous for a developer to want to do that--of all the names they could've picked...

The lawsuit adds that the unauthorized use of the Cosmopolitan name and its variations, including Cosmo, "demonstrates an intentional, willful and bad faith attempt to trade on the good will" of registered trademarks and "to cause confusion, deception and mistake in the minds of customers."

Wow, huh. Well, the resort is currently under construction and regardless of whatever name they would've chose, either way, I'm sure it will be a successful resort along Sin City's famous strip. Stay tuned!

Hearst Corporation Wk#1

So, I just found out that my favorite mag, Cosmopolitan, is owned by The Hearst Corporation. Not only is The Hearst Corporation one of the nation's largest diversified media companies, but it's major interest includes newpapers (San Francisco Chronicle), cable networks (ESPN, LifeTime, and The History Channel) , radio broadcasting (WTAE-TV-in Pittsburgh), and tons of other magazines (Esquire, RedBook, O Magazine, and Harper's Bizaar just to name a few).

Apparently The Hearst Corporation was founded by William Randolph Hearst 1800's (he was the son of a self-made millionaire George Hearst). Wow, that's a long way from the twenty first century. So, the current "COB" is a gentleman by the name of George R. Hearst, Jr. and there's a bunch of other trustees that follow the long list of corporate peoples.

There will be plenty more news, drama, and company information that I'll be digging up over the next few months...so here we go!
